Study led by UK Cancer Researchers Identifies Bacteria Associated with Deadly Prostate Disease—Precision Assays Could Follow trialsitenews.com  trialsitenews.com Study led by UK Cancer Researchers Identifies Bacteria Associated with Deadly Prostate DiseasePrecision Assays Could Follow TrialSite Staff 4 minutes A group of UK-based scientists recently reported on the results of a study investigating connecting five types of bacteria with cancers such as prostate cancer. A deadly disease killing 12,000 men annually in the UK alone with about 34,500 deaths in America, the recent study helps pave the way to determining the aggressiveness of the cancer. Published in European Urology Oncology, the study team led by medical researchers at Norwich Medical School as well as peers at Norfolk University and Norwich University Hospital, the Quadram Institute and other collaborators found five gener

LHRH sparing therapy in patients with chemotherapy-naïve, mCRPC treated with abiraterone acetate plus prednisone: results of the randomized phase II SPARE trial | Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases

LHRH sparing therapy in patients with chemotherapy-naïve, mCRPC treated with abiraterone acetate plus prednisone: results of the randomized phase II SPARE trial | Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases : Although the benefit of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) continuation in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) remains controversial, clinical evidence is lacking. Recent results indicated that treatment with abiraterone acetate (AA) plus prednisone (P) further suppresses serum testosterone levels over ADT alone, suggesting that continuation of ADT in the treatment of mCRPC may not be necessary. In this exploratory phase 2 study, mCRPC patients were randomized with a 1:1 ratio to receive either continued ADT plus AA + P (Arm A) or AA + P alone (Arm B). The primary endpoint was the rate of radiographic progression-free survival (rPFS) at month 12. Secondary endpoints included PSA-response rate, objective response, time to PSA progression and safety. A total of 68 pat

Repurposing generic drugs can reduce time and cost to develop new treatments – but low profitability remains a barrier

Repurposing generic drugs can reduce time and cost to develop new treatments – but low profitability remains a barrier theconversation.com Repurposing generic drugs can reduce time and cost to develop new treatments – but low profitability remains a barrier Jonathan Sexton 9-11 minutes Discovering new ways to use existing drugs can come about intentionally or by chance. Sometimes physicians or patients notice an unanticipated beneficial effect from a drug. One example is sildenafil , a drug originally developed to treat severe chest pain from coronary artery disease. While sildenafil failed clinical trials, researchers noticed that one of its side effects was induced erections. This led to its successful rebranding as the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. Most of the time when drugs are repurposed for diseases or conditions they were not originally intended for, it’s done deliberat

Cause of metastasis in prostate cancer discovered: MedUni Vienna study generates new momentum for diagnosis and treatment -- ScienceDaily sciencedaily.com Cause of metastasis in prostate cancer discovered: MedUni Vienna study generates new momentum for diagnosis and treatment 3-4 minutes Prostate cancers remain localised in the majority of cases, giving affected individuals a good chance of survival. However, about 20% of patients develop incurable metastatic prostate cancer, resulting in approximately 5,000 deaths each year in Austria alone. Medical research has not yet adequately explained why metastases occur in some people and not in others. A research team at MedUni Vienna has now discovered specific changes in a protein that drive the growth and spread of prostate cancer. The study was recently published in the journal Molecular Cancer. In the study, the researchers broke new grou
