Dr. Christopher Kane of UCSD Health Appointed Chairman of the American Board of Urology

SAN DIEGO, May 21, 2025 - Dr. Christopher Kane, a distinguished urologist and Professor of Urology at UC San Diego Health, has been appointed Chairman of the American Board of Urology (ABU), the organization announced today.

Dr. Kane, who has served as CEO of UC San Diego Health Physician Group and Dean of Clinical Affairs at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, brings decades of experience in urologic oncology and leadership to this prestigious national position.

Extensive Academic and Research Background

Dr. Kane earned his medical degree from Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by a residency in urology at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and a fellowship in urologic oncology at the National Cancer Institute. He joined the UCSD faculty in 2007 after serving as a Navy physician for 12 years.

As the C. Lowell and JoEllen Parsons Endowed Chair in Urology, Dr. Kane has built an impressive research portfolio focused on outcomes research in urologic cancer treatment. His laboratory investigations have received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and private foundations, resulting in groundbreaking advances in prostate cancer management.

"Dr. Kane's contributions to urologic research have fundamentally changed how we approach prostate cancer risk stratification," said Dr. Melissa Wong, Chief of the Division of Urology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. "His work on active surveillance protocols has spared thousands of men from unnecessary treatment while ensuring optimal outcomes."

Clinical Excellence and Innovation

Clinically, Dr. Kane is renowned for pioneering robotic-assisted surgical techniques for prostate and kidney cancer. He has performed over 3,000 robotic prostatectomies and has trained dozens of fellows who now practice throughout the world. His clinical practice at UCSD's Moores Cancer Center has been designated a Center of Excellence by the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

"I am deeply honored to accept this appointment," said Dr. Kane. "The American Board of Urology plays a crucial role in maintaining the highest standards in urologic care across the nation. I look forward to continuing its mission of excellence in certification and education."

The American Board of Urology's Crucial Role

The ABU, established in 1935, is one of 24 medical specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Its primary function is to establish and maintain standards of certification for urologists across the United States, ensuring that certified urologists meet rigorous standards of knowledge, skill, and professionalism.

As Chairman, Dr. Kane will oversee the board's comprehensive certification processes, including initial certification examinations, maintenance of certification programs, and subspecialty certifications in pediatric urology and female pelvic medicine. The position involves directing a complex assessment system that evaluates urologists' clinical judgment, surgical skills, and adherence to evidence-based practice.

The ABU Chair also serves as the organization's public face, working closely with other specialty boards, the American Urological Association, and international urology organizations to harmonize standards and address emerging challenges in urologic education and practice.

"The Chair position requires exceptional diplomatic skills," explained Dr. David Penson, the outgoing chairman. "Dr. Kane will be tasked with balancing the need for rigorous standards with the practical realities of modern medical practice. His experience in both academic and administrative roles makes him uniquely qualified for this responsibility."

Dr. Kane has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, served as principal investigator on multiple clinical trials, and has been consistently named among America's Top Doctors. He has previously held leadership positions in the Society of Urologic Oncology and the American Urological Association.

Dr. Robert Kaplan, President of the American Urological Association, praised the selection: "Dr. Kane's clinical expertise combined with his administrative acumen makes him an ideal choice to lead the American Board of Urology during this time of rapid advancement in our field. His particular expertise in healthcare quality metrics will be invaluable as we navigate the increasing emphasis on outcomes measurement in medicine."

The appointment is effective immediately, with Dr. Kane succeeding Dr. Penson of Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
